AAU Basketball FAQs

Tryouts will be held at PS 209 16-10 Utopia Parkway, Whitestone, NY 11357

Yes, there is a $25 tryout fee that can be paid by cash or check on site or by credit card online and is non-refundable. The tryout fee will be credited to travel teams fees, training, or DAC Spring League Fee.

During tryouts coaches throughout the Marksmen organization will be there to evaluate the skills of every player. The skills being evaluated will include but are not limited to, ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, teamwork, effort, hustle and attitude.

If your child does not make the team, your child can still play in the recreation league to help improve their game. In addition we also offer group training as well as one on one training.

Practices are the foundation of every team. They are highly competitive and intense. Practice is the best opportunity for players to learn the game and improve their skills. It is expected all players on the team make every practice and come to practice with a high level of energy and willingness to learn.

A combination of league games and tournaments depending on the team skill level are played mostly on weekends and some week nights. Each tournament will be played on weekends and range from 2 to 5 games depending on the tournament as well as the results. Each team will play in 4-5 local weekend tournaments over the course of the spring. Each team will typically play every other weekend.

All players are expected to be highly committed to the team. While it is ok to play on more than one team, games and practices for the Marksmen team are expected to take precedence.

The cost of the spring season is $995 with a uniform included. This cost includes tournament fees, uniforms, ref fees, coaches' salaries, insurance and practice time.

10 to 12 players make the team. If there are enough players to make a competitive second team there will be 2 teams for that particular age group.

No, trying out does not guarantee your child makes the team.

No every player is not guaranteed equal playing time. Travel basketball is very competitive and playing time will be distributed to those who show the most commitment and ability throughout practice as well as in-game performance. All players do get equal practice time to help develop, expand and improve their game.

Practices occur a minimum of 1 time per week and sometimes twice a week. Each practice runs a total of 90 minutes.

Games are played in the Tri-State area. Most games occur within a 90 minute drive. Eachindividual team will have their own tournament schedule based on where the coaches feel they will receive adequate competition. Some teams will compete in regional AAU tournaments and National qualifier tournaments. A few local facilities we are likely to play at would be:

Island Garden – Long Island
Hooperstown – Mt. Vernon NY
House of Sports – Ardsley NY
Brewster Sports Center – Brewster NY
Chelsea Piers – Stamford/NYC
Basketball City – NYC

Yes. We have many players who play on other teams. As conflicts will occur, we expect to be the priority in most cases.
